Mise en Scene - Downton Abbey - Class & Status

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IscFlwFNB6I

Colour.// Green pleasant background shown when the paperboy is biking towards the Abbey, sunlight beams over the background whilst the paperboy is almost a silhouette. The downstairs of the Abbey in the servants quarters is very dark which suggests not much care has been put into the downstairs to maintain high standards in comparison to the upstairs where everything is elegant and implies it is a high class place.
Costume.// The paperboy is wearing lower class clothing, seems to be a cold morning because he is wearing clothes that will keep him warm, the kitchen workers all wear similar clothing that suggests the job they do in the Abbey vividly. Waiters all wear suits because they will be present in the upstairs area of the Abbey and therefore must look suitable to be in the presence of the upper class. The upper class men all wear smart clothes such as suit's with ties to breakfast and the women wear dresses, this shows they have to maintain the high standard of clothing wherever they go.
Lighting.// The opening scene shows a contrast of darkness and light, the background is lit up by sunlight which shows the Abbey's gardens whereas the paperboy is almost in darkness making him a silhouette. The downstairs of the Abbey is pretty dull when it comes to lighting, whereas the upstairs uses lighting to make it look grand and of high class.
Body language/Posture.// The posture of the paperboy changes when he gets to the door to deliver the paper, he stands taller to look smart/formal upon delivery, when he leaves he slouches on his bike. The lady who is in bed moves eloquently and slowly, she maintains a similar posture throughout the scene. The man walks around with his arms behind his back, he maintains this posture whilst walking around and comes to a halt in the dining room when the man of more significance walks in, he holds his posture the same to look formal in front of the man with more authority.
Framing.// Camera shots are used to represent social class through the way that it often uses a low angle shot when looking at a member of the upper class, this is used so the audience look up to them as well to show their authority at the given time. Whereas the lower class are looked down on from a high angle shot to show they are weaker in society, they are also in the lower quarters of the abbey which represents the idea that they are less significant.
Hair and Makeup.// The lower class workers wear little/ no make-up because they are working, they also have their hair tied up to keep it out of the way when preparing food to ensure high standards of hygiene are maintained. The waiters have clean cut hair and side partings to look smart in the presence of the upper class, the upper class men have similar clean haircuts. The upper class women have their hair done neatly and wear make-up, this shows the divide between the upper and lower class when they are compared.
Setting and Props.// The woman who is lying in bed merely has to ring a bell and her breakfast is brought to her in bed, she is given a table with her breakfast on which she can place over her lap which enables her to eat in bed. She is also given a newspaper that has been ironed to ensure the ink is dry, this shows they aim to maintain high standards so the upper class are looked after well. The abbey itself is a very large building which immediately implies it is for the upper class, it has huge gardens as well to convey the same meaning. The newspaper is significant in the scene because the characters are reacting to the headlines, the whole scene is based around these headlines which sends a chain reaction through the abbey. The paperboy is delayed due to the big news, the news is then passed on through the abbey as quickly as possible to get the news to the upper class whilst maintaining high standards.
Facial Expressions.// The upper class tend to keep themselves from showing too much expression, this is portrayed when the Lord finds out that the Titanic has sunk, he shows very little concern even though he knows people on board. The lower class however show more expression, the head chef looks concerned when the lady of the abbey rings her bell to signify she is ready for her breakfast, this portrays the idea that she is nervous because she wants to maintain high standards to keep the lady happy. The lord shows a harsh look of concern when he opens the golden envelope, this causes the women to look at him with some concern as well, he leaves quickly and heads upstairs to wear the lady is still in her bedroom.

Representation of Disability - TV Drama.

Stereotypes & Countertypes.//
Camera shots/movement.// Camera shots are used in TV drama to show power/authority, this can be shown through different angles, movements and heights of the camera. One of the most common camera shots used in a TV drama to show a persons disability is the long shot, this is used to show a characters full body and how they fit in with the scene around them, this can be used to show a clear physical disability of a character. 'Two shots' are used in TV drama where a disabled character will be put next to an able bodied character to show they are weaker, this is a stereotype of disabled people which is represented on screen.
Editing.// Editing can be used to emphasise disability, this is noticeable when scenes are prolonged to create a sense of awkwardness in the atmosphere, this gives characters who are fortunate enough to not have a disability have a taste of what disabled characters go through much more often.
Sound.// Sound is used to create an atmosphere in TV drama, the atmosphere that commonly comes with the introduction of a disabled character is silence, silence creates a sense of awkwardness so it is often used in collaboration with a disabled character because they have more specific needs compared to a character without a disability, this gives off the idea that they are awkward.
Mise en scene.// Mise en scene is used to highlight the idea that the disabled person doesn't fit in, this is portrayed through; them being slower to get things done, often can't take part in 'fun' things due to their disability...
Gender.//
Age.// Younger people who are disabled seem to receive more sympathy for their disability than elders with disabilities, this may be due to the fact that disabilities are associated with old age.
Ethnicity.// I do not believe disability is effected by ethnicity, therefore there are no positives or negatives to how ethnicity effects disability.
Social class.//
Regional identity.//
Sexuality.//

Representation of Gender - Wire In The Blood Analysis.

Camera shots/movement.// The scene opens with a 'two shot' which shows the two characters from the clip leaving a house, the camera is also using an 'over the shoulder shot' because it is from the perspective of someone who is at the scene, the characters are followed by a 'tracking shot' as they walk out of the house. A 'two shot' is then used again, the female character displays her authority over the male through her assertive attitude towards him, she then goes on to give orders to others which shows her authority.  This clip completely opposes the idea of 'the male gaze' which suggests that men objectify women and have much more power/authority, this is evident through the female character 'Alex.'

Editing.// The clip features a small amount of editing, however it is used to change the scene from one to another when necessary.

Sound.// Sound is used within the scene where the male character is going through the files of the case, music is played in the background when the character is asking questions aloud to the case itself, the music is used to add a mysterious tone to the scene because the character is trying to solve the case. Sound is then used in the scene where the men are 'squatting' in the house because they have nowhere to live, eerie music is played in the background when the bald man shows his authority over everyone in the room by being the only one talking and silencing the rest of the characters in the room, the music helps represent the male character.

Mise en Scene.// Alex is portrayed to be a dominant character through the way she acts towards other characters, she seems to be 'married' to her job which puts a restriction on the time she can spend with her child. The male character who is significant in the first part of the clip seems to be more laid-back, however he also seems very smart because he is given the files of the case and works with them to try and find out the truth. The bald man who is significant in the scene with the 'squatters' seems to be quite powerful but would be classed as a bad character and is involved in crime, he doesn't mind getting his hands dirty which is evident when he grabs the mans head and hits it on the wall.

Video Clip Analysis.

The Wolf of Wall Street

Camera shots/movement.// The video opens with a 'crab shot' which follows Jordan Belfort, to highlight that he is the character to be looking at, as he begins his speech to the 'strattonites' The camera then changes to an 'over the shoulder shot' from one of the 'strattonites' who is listening intently to every word Belfort says. Furthermore the camera utilises a 'two shot' which shows the relationship between Belfort and the 'strattonites' because they cling on to every word he says to them which shows he is the dominant character. The scene continues with a close up shot of Belfort's face as he continues his speech to the 'strattonites,' this is used to turn attention to the character and in this case what he's about to say.

Editing.// The video features use of editing when Belfort throws his watch out to the 'strattonites' as it is put into slow motion using a high camera angle which looks down on them as they all try and clutch the watch as it flies through the air.

Sound.// The video opens with almost silence from everyone/everything in the room except from Jordan Belfort's voice which creates the atmosphere. The atmosphere created by Belfort's speech triggers a response from the 'strattonites' causing them to get rowdy and cheer at what Belfort says, the response from the 'strattonites' shows the dominance that Belfort has over them and how much they respect him.

Mise en scene.// Belfort dresses in a '$2000 suit' & wears a '$40,000 gold watch' which shows his wealth, he then shows he is 'filthy' rich when he throws his watch into the crowd of 'strattonites' who all eagerly try and grab it as it goes past their fingertips. The setting of the video is in the Stratton Oakmont office which gives the idea of it being a formal workplace, however it is then proven to be the complete opposite of that and is described as a 'wolf pit' by Belfort later on in the film. The main prop used in this scene is the microphone which suggests the sheer size of the office because Belfort has to use a microphone and speakers so the 'strattonites' can hear him, this also suggests how successful Stratton Oakmont are as they have a huge office with hundreds of employee's.

The Hobbit

Camera shots/movement.// The video opens with an 'over the shoulder shot' from behind Smaug who is standing up to the huge golden statue of Thrane. The statue stands taller than Smaug and a 'low angle shot' is used from behind Smaug looking up to the statue of Thrane suggesting he is more powerful. The camera then turns to Bilbo using a 'close up shot' on his face to show him anxiously watching what is about to happen. Further on in the video, Smaug breaks out of Erebor and flies into the air with gold coming off of his body. During this a 'low angle shot' is used from beneath Smaug to show his power and ruthlessness after the Dwarves attempt to kill him fails. The video ends with an 'extreme close up shot' on Smaug's face as he says 'I am fire, I am death' to ensure the audience focus on what Smaug says.

8 Mile

Camera shots/movement.// The video begins with a 'two shot' which features B-Rabbit & Papa Doc staring each other out where neither of them break the eye contact, this is used to show they are both trying to mentally gain the upper hand over the other. An 'over the shoulder shot' is then used when Future asks Papa Doc whether he chooses heads or tails, this shot is used to focus on the conversation between Future & Papa Doc. The video then continues with an 'over the shoulder shot' from behind Future as he talks to the crowd and a 'high angle shot' is used to look down on the crowd to show that the crowd are looking up to Future. The 'point of view shot' is used from the DJ who is behind all of the action which shows what he can see, he is watching Future, Papa Doc and B-Rabbit with the crowd cheering behind/beneath them. From this B-Rabbit begins his rap and a 'long shot' is used to set the scene and show how he fits in with the scene because you can see the crowd reacting to him.

Representation of Me.

Groups

Skater.// I put myself into this group because of the clothes I wear, the brands that come under the 'skater' title are brands that I buy. I own a skateboard and it would come under one of my hobbies, however I believe I fall into this category because I wear brands such as; Stussy, Palace, NikeSB, Adidas Skateboarding & HUF.

Sports Junkies.// I put myself into this group because I am passionate about sport and have a competitive attitude towards it. However I wouldn't say i'm a 'junky' when it comes to sport, I play football at club level & I play to win.

New Casual.// I put myself into this group because of; music that comes under this category, some clothes that I wear but mainly going to the football on a Saturday to watch Leicester City play.

Figures

Pharrell Williams.// He plays a part in  the brand 'Billionaire Boys Club' which is one of the brands I like to wear. Pharrell wears Billionaire Boys Club clothing himself and has a similar style to me, wearing his shirts and jumpers baggy looks better in my opinion.

Wiz Khalifa.// He is pictured wearing a long top and black skinny jeans which is a style that I think looks good and I do choose to wear my clothes like this, black skinny jeans tend to look good with most clothes in my opinion.

Stefan Janoski.// Stefan Janoski released his own brand of shoes called 'Nike Jansokis.' I think I am similar to Stefan purely for his own brand of shoes that he has released, I wear these shoes and own more than one pair in different colors.

I wear the clothes that these celebrities wear because I think the clothes are good quality and also look very good when worn in the style that the celebrities represent. I wear the clothes represented by the celebrities in the fashion that they wear them as well because I think they look stylish. I like to buy branded clothes such as; Palace, Stussy, HUF, Billionaire Boys Club, Lyle & Scott, Ralph Lauren, NikeSB, Adidas etc. to create my own image of me.

Media 5x5

5 Albums:
//The Marshall Mathers LP.// One of Eminem's early albums which was released a year after his career took off in 1999. I personally enjoy this album because it features songs about Marshall's life which highlight his problems and how he deals with them.
//Curtain Call.// Released in 2005, an album that features all of Marshall's biggest hits. I enjoy listening to this album because it contains his best music from previous years so each track is faultless.
·   //Recovery.// A follow on album from 'Relapse.' Relapse was released after Marshall's 4 year absence bringing him back onto the scene, however Eminem raps 'let's be honest, that Relapse CD was ehh' suggesting he was unsure about his album. Eminem then later said he wasn't happy with Relapse during an interview with Jonathan Ross, which called for the release of 'Recovery.' I enjoy listening to Recovery because every song is quality but they differentiate massively.
//48:13.// An album released by the biggest band to come from Leicester, this album from Kasabian was released after the announcement of their homecoming gig 'Summer Solstice' which was held in Leicester on 21st June 2014. This album encouraged me to get a ticket for Summer Solstice and it didn't disappoint, hearing some of the 48:13 songs live alongside a quality atmosphere made it one of the best days of my life.
//2001.// An album released by DR.DRE, this album features many of DRE's more well known songs such as; Still D.R.E, The Next Episode & Forgot About Dre. I enjoy this album because it was released over a decade ago but the songs never get old.

5 Films:
//The Wolf of Wall Street.// I enjoyed this film because it tells the story of a man who becomes 'filthy' rich, Jordan Belfort (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) develops an addiction for; Drugs, Alcohol, Women and most of all Money. The film has an exquisite story line and is based on a true story, however the story also proves that money can't buy you happiness.
·  //Shawshank Redemption.// A film that portrays the story of Andy Dufresne who is locked away in Shawshank prison for the murder of his wife and her lover despite his claims of innocence. The film highlights a mans desperation for freedom coinciding with his divine amount of patience, Dufresne defies all odds when he escapes Shawshank prison because 'nobody escapes Shawshank.'
·  // 8 Mile.// One of my favorite films because it portrays the early life of Eminem and how he came from nothing to become the man he is today, 8 mile has an inspirational story line and was also released a couple of weeks after arguably Eminem's most famous song 'Lose Yourself.'
·  //The Hobbit.// I enjoyed The Hobbit because it is set before The Lord of the Rings trilogy and will also become a trilogy upon the release of the third Hobbit film. The Hobbit is set in a fantasy world during medieval times following the journey of Bilbo Baggins who joins a group of travelling Dwarves who aim to take back their homeland.
·  //Harry Potter & the Philosophers Stone.// The beginning of arguably the biggest film series of all time. Harry Potter & The Philosophers Stone is the first of eight films which were released throughout my childhood, all of the films are equally as good and build up to one of the best finales from a series of films.

5 Sportsmen:
·        -Cristiano Ronaldo.// Ever since Cristiano's arrival at Manchester united in  2003 I have always enjoyed watching him play, he brings something most players are incapable of bringing to the game and is a leader within the Portugal national team.
·        -Riyad Mahrez.// Riyad joined Leicester City in January 2014 and helped Leicester gain promotion to the Premier League, Riyad has proven his worth to the team and has been instrumental in Leicester's start to their Premier League campaign.
·        -Mo Farah.// Mo Farah has represented Great Britain at the Olympic games and has proven his worth to the team when winning gold in the 5000m's & the 10,000m's at the 2012 games, Mo is an inspirational sportsman.
·        -David Beckham.// David Beckham is an iconic figure in sport for his football career and the work he now does working in America encouraging kids to play football. David also represented England when making their bid to host World Cup. My favorite moment from David's career is the free-kick he scored in the 2002 World Cup qualifiers against Greece.
·        -Zlatan Ibrahimovic.// Zlatan is one of my favorite sportsmen because of his ability on the pitch and the way he deals with the media, Zlatan is very confident in his own ability and describes himself to be "like a fine wine because the older I get, the better I get."
